A/C Compatible LEDs:
Focused Lens Inverted Lens 4-LED Focused New: Frosted Why LEDs? LEDs generate excellent light using very little energy thus generating little or no heat - plus they last practically forever. LEDs typically are for DC only but ours are AC compatible and can be used in 12-14VAC applications. Available in screw mount or bayonet mount in four colors, Cool White, Green, Red and NOW: Warm White! Now you can replace those power robbing incandescent lamps in your layout: in your Lionel switches (sorry, we don't have a replacement yet for the little "wedge" lamp MTH switches and passenger cars), in your buildings and street lamps. Plus, replace old engine lamps, scratch-built block signals - imagine the possibilities! Example of New Warm Whites in Caboose:
We will continue to offer both styles, "Cool White" and "Warm White".
Note:
We offer the following variations:
Screw Mount Base Bayonet Base Features/Benefits/Applications:
Applications / InformationDesign - The LEDs bulbs are not glass but instead are a solid, hard plastic mounted on a metal encapsulated base so there is little chance of breakage. There is actually a resister and a diode soldered in the base so we can use them for A/C applications. Running at higher voltages - Operating voltage is best from about 10VAC - 14VAC. The manufacturer advises that higher voltages up to about 16V should be fine, but this increases the heat in the built-in resister and would probably decrease the life of the bulb. Over 18V is definitely not recommended and could reduce bulb life to just a few hours. To the best of our knowledge currently there is not a "true" 18V LED available with the exception of our Universal LED which is a PC Board-based design with current limiting technology. Brightness - LED brightness tends not to vary with voltage input. They might be a little dull with very low voltage input, but once you hit about 8 volts the brightness levels out. If you need a brighter lamp go with the 4-LED version. Lionel switches - cool white inverted lens is best, with mini-bayonet base. (LED-BI-C).
Lionel Switch Activators - For older ones without caps, we suggest red and green inverted lenses, and they are screw base. We originally exhibited focused lens bulbs at the York October '05 show, but we changed the display to inverted and think it's a nicer light.
For the newer switch activators with colored caps, use the clear inverted for since it's a little shorter. Passenger cars - confirm whether your cars have screw bases or mini bayonets, and again we recommend cool white or warm white inverted. Since the light comes out the side instead of straight down, it's a nicer, warmer glow. American Flyer - We checked out some American Flyer bulbs at York and our mini bayonet's are the same size as what they use. LEDs in Engines - We've sold LEDs for use in older engines and they work great. One customer bought the 4-LED and that was too bright. He like regular cool white focused lenses better. For more engine installation examples, go to Installation Examples. Using LEDs in MTH engines - turns out the PC boards in MTH engines produce DC voltage for the headlamp. You may have polarity issues. Our lamps will work with DC (unless it's an engine with the very small bulbs, but again the polarity may not be right (won't light). TIP: Using our A/C Ready LED for DC? You can use our LEDs for DC too, just note the polarity: Bulb tip is "+", Bulb outside is "-".
