Now available!  Universal LEDs!

We call this a "Universal LED" because it is designed to operate at higher voltages than standard LEDs.  Even with our regular A/C ready LEDs there are operational challenges once you subject them to voltages over about 16 volts, i.e. MTH DCS and Lionel TMCC command control systems.  This current limiting design allows use in passenger cars and more - even at 18 - 20 volts A/C.  Order# LED-UC.

The latest addition in our line of hugely successful A/C Ready LEDs, the Universal LED fills an important void: passenger car illumination with command control fixed voltage systems.  But they can be used in a number of other applications down to about 3 volts.  The unique amperage regulating design makes sure proper amperage is applied to the LED, no matter what the voltage.  Screw terminals are included for easy hook-up; suggested mounting is the use of hot glue for either vertical or horizontal mounting.  The recently introduced flat LED is very white compared to typical LEDs and shines very brightly both from the front and the back(!).

We are also going to make available the current limiting pc board -only, without LED, for use with our standard A/C ready LEDS with sockets.  Why?  For those applications where voltage spikes could "fry" an LED - i.e. Searchlight cars and more.  An inherent characteristic of the design provides voltage spike protection for the LEDs (from gaps in the track, turn-outs, etc).

Of course one of the biggest LED features is long life as compared to an incandescent bulbs, but maybe even more importantly for model train operators is LEDs are electrical "misers", using a fraction of the wattage of a regular bulb.    Illuminated passenger cars eat up a lot of valuable power and LEDs can give you that power back.

Key Benefits:

  • Universal Multi-Voltage Design (up to 20 VAC +)
  • Bright White LED
  • Compact Design
  • AC or DC Compatible
  • Inherent Transient Protection
  • Thin surface mounting design
  • Screw Terminals for easy hook up (very small...you'll need eyeglass repair tool-sized flat head screwdriver)
  • Protective coating
  • Can be mounted vertically or horizontally (suggest hot glue)
  • Great for passenger cars
  • Reduce power consumption

Small size: Here's a picture of the Universal LED beside a dime.  Overall size is about 1.5" long by 3/8" wide.  The board is very thin but overall height is about 12/32" (because of the screw connectors).

It's hard to get a picture of the LED illuminated, because it throws off the camera, but this will give you an idea:

See the installation example pages.  I've installed 2 Universal LEDs in a Lionel B&O passenger car (6-19048) and three (3) in a MTH C&O passenger car (from the 30-6762 60' Streamlined Passenger Set).   Both of these passenger cars utilize "Christmas tree"-style bulbs, mounted vertically on the bottom in the case of the Lionel, and horizontally across the top with the MTH car.

Also available, LED Current Limiting Device:

This is the same pc board as in our universal LEDs, just without the LED.   To be used with standard 12VAC LEDs for current limiting (i.e. command control systems) and for spike protection for an AC Ready LED (i.e. searchlight car).    Connect in series with LED.  Order # LED-CLD.
